Hi Coach Takano,

I have a question about the rounding of the lower back while squatting I hope you can answer. What exactly causes it? Is it a lack of flexibility in the ankles, a weak lower back, weak abs, or a combination of all of them? Also would the reasons be different if someone was rounding during body weight squats as opposed to a loaded squat?

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and great site!

Sorry to take so long in replying to you. All of the factors you mention could be involved in your bent back. Another one to consider is tight hamstrings. These can be remediated with wide stance good mornings. Ankle stretches will help the ankle range of motion and hyperextensions will strengthen the back.
If you round during a weightless squat, but not during a loaded squat, it is probably due to your keeping your shoulders back in order to support the weight. I hope this is helpful
